Perry Niessen Studios Inc., operating as Island Stoneware, is a leading producer of handmade pottery located in Summerside, Prince Edward Island.
As a manufacturing wholesaler, our main business is making pottery to sell to retailers. We also have a small retail space in our production studio. We are a small but mighty team with the capacity to create beautiful, handmade pottery in volume.
About the Role
We're looking to add another Hand Builder to our studio. This is a full-time position. Your chief responsibility is hand building pottery from slab, attaching handles to items thrown on the wheel and incising designs like our Celtic knot.
Prior experience is preferred by not required. The successful candidate must demonstrate capacity for fine, detailed hand work and comfort with repetitive tasks. Successful candidates may come from a fine arts, culinary or skilled trade background where fine, detailed work was required. The role requires outstanding commitment to quality, ability to stand for long periods of time and lifting up to 20 kg.

Hand Builder Job Description
Hand build stoneware products, including:
- clay preparation,
- use of the pug mill,
- use of the slab roller,
- placing and shaping clay on hand building molds,
- incising, decorating, trimming items,
- placing products on carts
- shuttling production carts to/from the kiln room and around the studio as needed
Weigh and prepare balls of clay for throwing on the wheel
Cut items thrown on the wheel off the bat
Cleaning bats and re-stocking potters' throwing stations
Make and attach handles to items thrown on the wheel
Incise designs and lettering
Help manage order fulfillment
Loading and unloading of kilns
Cleaning of tools and workspace, including:
- Wiping of shelves
Picking and packing orders for wholesale customers
Assist both wholesale and retail customers on the phone and in person, as well as to pack and ship orders.
Engaging customers/visitors to the production studio, sharing knowledge of creative inspirations behind each product and the production process for handmade pottery
Processing customer transactions using cash register and point-of-sale terminal for debit/credit terminal
Handling cash and completing daily sales reports
Responding to telephone inquiries and/or orders for products
