About Us

Perry Niessen Studios Inc., operating as Island Stoneware, is a leading producer of handmade pottery located in Borden-Carleton on Prince Edward Island. We are seeking a Production Potter/Studio Technician to join our studio and help create the finely crafted pottery we sell to customers across Canada and the United States.

As a manufacturing wholesaler, our main business is making pottery to sell to retailers. We also have a small retail space in our production studio. We are a small but mighty team with the capacity to create beautiful, handmade pottery in volume. We have a part-time production potter dedicated exclusively to throwing. In addition, we have a full-time person responsible for hand building, handling, incising, glazing, loading/unloading kilns. We have another person dedicated to managing the studio and providing production support.

1) PRODUCTION POTTER / STUDIO TECHNICIAN

About the Role

SIGNIFICANT EXPERIENCE IS ESSENTIAL FOR THIS ROLE. APPLICANTS MUST CLEARLY INDICATE PRIOR EXPERIENCE AND, PREFERABLY, INCLUDE LINKS OR IMAGES FROM YOUR PORTFOLIO. APPLICATIONS WITHOUT THE REQUIRED EXPERIENCE WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

We're looking to add another potter to our studio. This is a full-time position. As our new Production Potter/Studio Technician, you will participate in all stages of production. Your chief responsibility will be to throw on the wheel. You will also spend time attaching handles and incising designs like our Celtic knot, as well as hand building items from slab.

Experience throwing pottery on the wheel is essential. As a production pottery studio, potters can throw more than 70 pieces each day. Experience with kiln maintenance is a significant asset. We have 5 kilns and one is almost always firing at any given time. Experience and interest in glaze formulation is also an asset. We use custom Cone 6 dipping glazes made in-house. From time to time we need to adjust those formulations and/or understand what is driving a variation in glaze performance.

As we introduce new products, we convene as a group to gather new ideas, try samples and iterate forms. We re-convene as a group to critique samples to land on a final design. The items we create are a brand expression of Island Stoneware, not the vision of a single individual.

All team members have round the clock access to the studio and are able to create their own work on their own time.

We are looking to hire as soon as a qualified candidate is found. This position is based in our Borden-Carleton studio on Prince Edward Island. Our work week is 37.5 hours. If you’re interested in joining our team, please contact Jamie Niessen, Owner, at jamie [@] islandstoneware.ca with your resume and access/links to photos of your portfolio of work.

2) HAND BUILDER

About the Role

As a Handbuilder, you will participate in many stages of production and order fulfillment. This is a full-time position. You will attach handles and incise designs like our Celtic knot. You will also spend time hand building items from slab. In this process, we use a slab roller to sheet clay and build pieces from forms. The Handbuilder will also prepare balls of clay for potters throwing on the wheel, load and unload kilns as well as wax bisqueware. You will also work with the owner to manage the flow of product through the studio and help manage order fulfillment. You may also be called upon to assist both wholesale and retail customers on the phone and in person, as well as to pack and ship orders.

An attention to detail and quality is a must. You should be good with fine, detailed handwork. Previous experience working with clay is an asset but not required. On the job training is provided.
